Around the Square

3 Jul

Edited to add: A previous version of this post referred to the Hare Krishna as a cult.  I made the comment in jest and apologize to anyone I may have offended.  Sometimes I forget people besides my friends read this blog.  Nevertheless, I have removed the section in question and will be more cognizant of my words in the future.

My older brother is in town for the Fourth of July weekend.  Today I showed him around Harvard’s campus and the Square and we explored some of Cambridge.

The busiest cross-section of Harvard Square

We passed a quite a few street performers, all with a unique style.  After playing violin for ten years, Brother was impressed by a Russian violinist.  But my favorite was the group of (I think) Hare Krishna members. The group was made up of various ethnicities though some were clearly Indian.

Hello! I’m a member of the Krishna Consciousness movement in Boston. I’m sorry to disappoint you but the Hare Krishna’s are not a cult. We are a religious movement and singing in public is called “Harinam.” It’s one of our practices, similar to Christmas Carols. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. : )

I sincerely apologize for my comments. Calling your organization a “cult” was made in jest without any knowledge of the movement and I have removed the inaccurate content. I mean for this blog to be inclusive to all and avoid stereotypes. Thank you for taking the time to correct me.

No worries at all! I’m glad that you enjoyed the singing! I was actually googling an image of harinam and that picture came up so I clicked on it (I thought to myself, “Hey! I know those people! Those are my friends!!” Haha). I did not mean to be sarcastic when saying that I hoped I wasn’t disappointing you, you just truly seemed excited about the cult aspect. Maybe you’ll see us around again sometime in Harvard Square! We usually go there during the summer months. Much love and thank you for posting that lovely picture!
