Dear Sneha,

We are big fans of Brown Girl Magazine and enjoy all the articles written. We would like to personally invite Brown Girl Magazine to an upcoming art show on Friday, May 11 from 7 to 10 pm. This art exhibit will showcase works from local Indian female artists from Houston, Texas. The artist names are as follows:

    Deepika Sanduja
    Sneha Shah

This event would be absolutely beneficial for both Nature's Market and Brown Girl Magazine to show our support for these two amazingly talented Indian women. The art show will present an opportunity for both organizations to rally around and foster the arts especially in the Indian community.

Nature's Market, is a farmers market offering the best in local food and wine including fresh juices, vegetarian/vegan food, wine, flavored olive oil/vinegar and more. We are dedicated to providing our customers with only the healthiest choices available from local farms.

Please join us on Facebook:

Also follow us on Twitter:

Our website is as follows:

Hi, Sneha, I really enjoyed this article. In my family, I never experienced any of these restrictions mostly because my mother had a different mind-set. However, I want offer a possible different explanation via a Punjabi wedding tradition. Recently I went to India to shop for my wedding. We wear these things called khaleri which are tied to your bangles and hang down from them. I read somewhere that these are "traditionally" worn for forty days to keep a new bride from doing housework. I wonder if it could be that the restriction on menstruating women could be a similar thing. Perhaps it does have to do with impurity, but might it have something to do with providing rest?

Hi. I am Jesse, the minister of Spiritual Humanism. Its been a few years since you posted this, but I found it tonight and found it very funny. I have never worn a fedora or smoked clove cigarettes (but, like most residents of Brooklyn, I had a screenplay I was working on when I was in my early twenties...). At any rate, I do not belong to a cult, but if YOU start one, please let me know. And, of course, if you ever get married and needed an officiant, I would consider performing it -- that is, if you are interested in being listed in the NY Times.

Aziz Ansari is such an amazing actor, I especially love his character on Parks & Rec. I, too, strongly dislike when Indians change their names to sound more Western, but as always Aziz makes even such a touchy topic for me humorous. :)
